Commander Jess Tracy

The oldest AMVETS Post in the State of Tennessee was awarded its charter in March of 1948. Post 2 established a place to call Home by acquiring a plot of land in the late 1950s. This land included a washhouse/dayroom that had been used by Secret City workers housed in nearby dormitories.

Post 2 has committed to serving veterans, their families and the community by developing service projects that have continued over decades. In the early days the Post showed films on Saturday mornings for children, sponsored the Boys Club football teams and sponsored a checkpoint for the Walk for Mankind.

Post 2 participated in the Drivers Excellence National Program by providing a full scholarship and a new car to the winner of the Driving School competition. Our more recent and ongoing projects include supporting the ORHS NJROTC, US Naval Sea Cadets, Wreaths Across America, Memorial Day Flag Placement, Oak Ridge Greenways and Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge.

Over the years the Post’s building has increased in size to the current facility that we are proud to call Home still today. Our backyard is a sanctuary for wildlife as well as our members. We hold events such as fish fries, family picnics, evenings by the campfire and horseshoe tournaments.

We have had two members from our Post continue their service in the organization to hold the office of State and National Commander, Jimmy T. Smith and the late John Mitchell. We are grateful for their commitment to this Post and to the Veterans they encountered along the way.
